UCT student suspended

University of Cape Town, Cape Town, South Africa

Chumani Maxwele, a UCT student who threw human excrement onto the statue of Cecil John Rhodes in March this year that sparked a series of protests at the university which subsequently resulted in the removal of the statue from the university has been suspended by the institution for two months. It is alleged that he racially abused a female staff member and assaulted her. Maxwele has since laid a counter complaint against the staff member, saying he was the one that had been victimised and racially profiled.
