Just when South Africans are discussing the motion that calls for constitutional review to allow for expropriation of land without compensation, Ndifuna Ukwazi, an activist group is calling for the leasing of land in Sea Point for low-cost housing while the City of Cape Town wants to lease it to sports clubs.
A group of backyarders in Gugulethu began to occupy vacant land in the township last week and started erecting shacks. By Sunday, the protestors had barricaded the busiest routes in the township, demanding to speak to the Mayor about housing delivery.
Before the delivery of the State of the Nation address that had land expropriation as a talking point, the Eastern Cape MEC released a statement inviting commercial farmers in the drought stricken Western Cape to move and invest in the Eastern Cape, something a land rights group describes as an insult to small-scale farmers.
It is not unsual for municipalities and other spheres of government to implement projects without making sure that the beneficiaries have access to training, markets and most importantly that the project is not the only “poverty alleviation” measure in the community. There has been an increasing number of land and housing activists that have been murdered lately. Mthunzi “Ras Moziah” Zuma was shot and killed during a road blockade next to the land they were occupying near Khayelitsha Mall. Less than a month later another land and housing activist in Imizamo Yethu in Hout Bay 41 kilometres west of Khayelitsha was shot by the police during a housing protest and later died in hospital.
Land and housing activists have pledged to continue taking and occupying vacant land despite brutal repression by the state and the killing of those who fight for land. The commitment was made at seminar in Khayelitsha Monday night where different groups of organisations representing activists from Durban, Johannesburg and Cape Town met to share their experiences of state and police brutality.

Another land activist and leader of the group of backyarders from Town 2 who are occupying land next to Khayelitsha Magistrate court has been killed. Philela Gilwa, 23 was stabbed in Khayelitsha on Saturday night.
