Siqalo and broader Mitchell’s Plain communities clash

The situation was calm at Siqalo informal settlement on Thursday morning following a protest for land, housing and provision of better services by the City of Cape Town. The protest, which saw the barricading of Jakes Gerwel Drive with burning tyres and communal waste containers, resulted in a counter-protest from residents of Colorado Park. The protest has been suspended following a meeting between community groups in Mitchell’s Plain.

Trade unions and farmworker organisations condemn #BlackMonday as racist

The Cosatu in the Western Cape has condemned the protest march by farmers on Monday. The protest was organised by AgriSA, Freedom Front+ and Afri-Forum. According to the statement released by Cosatu WC on Tuesday, the protest was racist and to be protesting ‘farm attacks’ and not ‘attacks that take place on farms’ “is an attempt to politicise the violence and isolate it to one group”.

Classes have resumed at Klipspruit-West High

The source of the tension was the appointment of a new principal at Klipspruit West High. Soon the tensions spread to Eldorado Park, leading to the withdrawal by the teacher’s union, SADTU, of its members from work.
