Lockdown keeps the peace in Mthatha taxi turf war

The peace agreement intended to bring the turf war between rival taxi associations in Mthatha in the Eastern Cape appears to be holding. Police Minister Bheki Cele brokered the deal by closing taxi ranks and routes. A month after the signing of the deal, just two ranks have reopened.

Community forcibly removed in 2011 languishes in transit camp

In 2011, the informal settlement of Bhungeni in Butterworth in the Eastern Cape was demolished to make way for a shopping mall and the residents were relocated to a transit camp erected by the Department of Human Settlements. They remain to this day in this camp they called Eugene and no shopping mall has been built on the land they vacated.

Minister intervenes in Mthatha taxi violence

Police minister, Bheki Cele has intervened in the taxi violence in Mthatha that has claimed more than 60 people’s lives since 2016 by suspending major routes indefinitely, until the terms of a peace accord brokered between the warring taxi associations are respected.

Ngcobo community holds a cleansing ceremony

Memorial service of the five cops held in Engcobo

A memorial service was held on Tuesday for police officers killed at the Engcobo Police Station in the Eastern Cape last week. Five officers and a retired soldier were killed when a gang attacked the station. Suspects linked to a cult in a nearby village were arrested in a raid on their church.

Government slow to fix storm damaged school

Learning and teaching is compromised in one of the schools affected by a recent storm in the Eastern Cape. The Department of Education claims that Disaster Management has not finalised the report, three weeks after the school’s roof was damaged.
