People with disabilities demand better services from Metrorail

As part of International Day for People with Disabilities, a group of disabled train commuters took the train from Cape Town Station to Fish Hoek to illustrate the challenges that disabled commuters face on a daily basis when trying to board a train. They feel that Metrorail should be providing friendlier services to the disabled.

As they marched to hand over their memorandum of grievances to the ministry of transport at Union Buildings in Pretoria, taxi owners and drivers affiliated to the National Taxi Alliance unequivocally registered their anger at the Transport Minister, Joe Maswanganyi’s slow response to their demands.

Despite the South African government declaring the month of October as transport month, public transport in South Africa is still a big problem. October has come and gone but commuters in Khayelitsha township in Cape Town are frustrated with public transport.
For many people who rely on trains, buses or minibus taxis to go to and from work, public transport is dysfunctional.
